Street Names
We are used to well signed streets that have more or less permanent names.
It was not always so. The
Henley Advertiser dated November 18th , 1876 reported on a meeting
of the Local Board where a decision was taken to attach signs at a small number
of street corners, suggesting that street name signs were not usual before that date.
During the census years the recorded street names did change from one census to
the next. The various courts leading off the main streets were sometimes recorded
as a separate street and sometime included as part of that main street.
This page presents data for individual streets and also for groups of street
names to compensate for the inconsistencies.
We hope at some time to provide a guide to the street names of Henley.
The default data is the population of each named street for each year. Note how
few entries thare are for some street names. Alternatively, data can be extracted for
the number of households or buildings, in total or by habitation status. Census data
collected on a schedule supposedly completed by the householder and transcribed into
the enumerator's book. Where a building was in shared occupancy there might be two
or more schedules or there might be a single schedule with a single line drawn in the
enumerator's book separating the households. Lodgers were sometime assigned a
separate schedule and sometimes not, so the number of schedules is an unreliable
indicator of the number of households. Houses that were unoccupied or being built
were usually indicated in the preceding schedule. At the beginning of this project,
transcribers were asked to use an Excel worksheet that did not record the habitation
and occupancy data. Although the Group has reworked this data, no liability is
accepted for its accuracy. It is believed, however, that the extracts are a good
indication of the data as recorded by the enumerators.
The population of individual Henley Streets
This page abstracts from the database the population of each
named street found in each of the census returns. The names used
varied from one census to the next. To make meaningful comparisons
across the census years, there is a form following the table
which allows a single street name or a group of street names to be
selected and the population of the selection to be displayed in
tabular and graphical form.
